Almighty G-d, Sovereign of the Universe, Who created humanity with infinite wisdom. You breathed into us the breath of life, and endowed us with knowledge, discernment, and the sacred power of speech and the written word—that they might serve as instruments to reveal Your will, pursue justice, and sustain the world in truth and peace.
In Your continuous providence, You have appointed me to stand as a watchman upon the walls of the community, to bring light into darkness, and to give voice to those who groan under the yoke of injustice and lies. Here I stand, prepared to begin my labor and execute the duties of my calling. Strengthen my body and spirit, and spread over me the shelter of Your peace and truth, for without Your aid, not even the least of my efforts will succeed.
I beseech You, preserve my heart from the thirst for gain and from the pursuit of clickbait, renown, and admiration. Remove from me the temptation to sell the truth in the service of the Great Stereopticon, which deceives Your creatures with false images and stirs up conflict between neighbors. Guard me from the sin of turning human suffering into entertainment and wickedness into profit. Let me not be as a talebearer scattering empty words, and do not bequeath to me a tongue of smooth flattery and falsehoods.
May it be Your will, O faithful G-d, that I see in every subject of my reporting a creation of Your hands, formed in Your divine image. Grant me the fortitude to report with absolute impartiality on the rich and the poor without favor and without steering away from verified facts. Illuminate my mind to recognize what is visible and to discern what is hidden, and eradicate all personal bias and cunning from my heart.
Guard my tongue and my pen from the deadly transgressions of lashon hara (harmful speech), rechilut (talebearing), motzi shem ra (slander), and dibat ha’aretz (defaming reports). Direct me to write strictly for a constructive purpose (to’elet)—to warn against violence, expose exploitation, and cry out for the destitute. Grant me the wisdom to weigh my words with the scales of Your law, and insulate my ears from listening to worthless talk, so that I do not place a stumbling block before the blind by causing the public to read forbidden speech.
Should those who are wiser than I seek to correct my path and instruct me, grant me the humility to listen and acknowledge the truth. But should partisan mobs, court flatterers, or self-serving actors seek to deride or intimidate me, plant within me the courage and steadfastness to stand firm for justice, regardless of their status, lineage, or power.
Never allow the deceptive thought to arise in me that I have attained sufficient knowledge. Vouchsafe to me the time, diligence, and zeal to investigate continuously, for Your truth is deep, and its measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea. Make me swift and eager to correct my errors, and let neither financial gain nor pride prevent me from admitting falsehood and mistake.
O merciful and gracious G-d, receive my prayer. Make me an instrument of Your loving-kindness and truth, so that the work of my hands and the words of my mouth may sanctify Your name, and let no stumbling block or corruption arise from my pen. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable before You, O L-rd, my Rock and my Redeemer.
תְּפִלַּת הָעִתּוֹנָאִי
אֵל עֶלְיוֹן, רִבּוֹן הָעוֹלָמִים, יוֹצֵר הָאָדָם בְּחָכְמָה. אַתָּה נָפַחְתָּ בָּנוּ נִשְׁמַת חַיִּים, וְחָנַנְתָּ אֶת הָאָדָם בְּדֵעָה, בְּבִינָה, וּבְכֹחַ הַדִּבּוּר וְהַכְּתָב—שֶׁיִּהְיוּ כֵּלִים לְגַלּוֹת רְצוֹנְךָ, לִרְדֹּף צֶדֶק, וּלְקַיֵּם אֶת הָעוֹלָם בְּאֱמֶת וּבְשָׁלוֹם.
בְּהַשְׁגָּחָתְךָ הַתְּמִידִית, קָרָאתָ לִי לִהְיוֹת שׁוֹמֵר עַל חוֹמוֹת הַקְּהִלָּה, לְהָבִיא אוֹר לַחֲשֵׁכָה, וּלְהַשְׁמִיעַ אֶת קוֹלָם הַנֶּאֱנָקִים תַּחַת עֹל עָוֶל וּשְׁקָרִים. וְהִנֵּה אָנִי עוֹמֵד לְהַתְחִיל בַּעֲבוֹדָתִי, לִשְׁקֹד עַל פְּקֻדַּת מִשְׁמַרְתִּי. חַזֵּק אֶת גּוּפִי וְרוּחִי, וּפְרֹשׂ עָלַי סֻכַּת שְׁלוֹמֶךָ וַאֲמִתֶּךָ, כִּי בִּלְעֲדֵי עֶזְרָתְךָ לֹא יִצְלַח שׁוּם דָּבָר.
אָנָּא, נְצֹר אֶת לְבָבִי מֵאַהֲבַת הַבֶּצַע וּמֵרְדִיפַת הַכָּבוֹד, הַשֵּׁם וְהַתְּהִלָּה. הָסֵר מִמֶּנִּי אֶת הַפִּתּוּי לִמְכֹּר אֶת הָאֱמֶת בַּעֲבוֹדַת מְכוֹנַת מַרְאִית הָעַיִן הַגְּדוֹלָה, הַמַּטְעָה אֶת הַבְּרִיּוֹת בְּצִלְלֵי שָׁוְא וּמְסִיתָה אִישׁ בְּרֵעֵהוּ. שְׁמֹר עָלַי מִן הַחֵטְא שֶׁל הֲפָכַת הַצַּעַר לְשַׁעֲשׁוּעַ וְהָרֶשַׁע לְמָמוֹן. אַל תַּנִּיחַ לִי לִהְיוֹת כְּרוֹכֵל הַמְּפַזֵּר דִּבּוּרִים רֵיקִים, וְאַל תַּנְחִילֵנִי לָשׁוֹן שֶׁל חֲלָקוֹת וּכְזָבִים.
יְהִי רָצוֹן מִלְּפָנֶיךָ, הָאֵל הַנֶּאֱמָן, שֶׁאֶרְאֶה בְּכָל אָדָם הַנִּכְנָס בִּגְבוּל כְּתִיבָתִי יְצוּר כַּפֶּיךָ, הַנִּבְרָא בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים. תֵּן לִי אֹמֶץ רוּחַ לִכְתֹּב בְּאֹפֶן שָׁוֶה על עָשִׁיר וְעל רָשׁ לְלֹא מַשּׂוֹא פָּנִים וּלְלֹא נְטִיָּה מִן הָעֻבְדּוֹת הַמּוּצָקוֹת. הָאֵר אֶת עֵינַי לְהַבְחִין בֵּין הַנִּגְלֶה לַנִּסְתָּר, וְהַשְׁמֵד מִלִּבִּי כָּל פְּנִיָּה וְעָרְמָה.
שְׁמֹר עַל לְשׁוֹנִי וְעַל קֻלְמוֹסִי מֵחֵטְא הַמָּוֶת שֶׁל לָשׁוֹן הָרָע, רְכִילוּת, מוֹצִיא שֵׁם רָע וְדִּבַּת הָאָרֶץ. הַדְרֵךְ אוֹתִי לִכְתֹּב אַךְ וְרַק לְתוֹעֶלֶת הָרַבִּים—לְהַזְהִיר מִפְּנֵי הֶחָמָס, לַחְשֹׂף אֶת הָעוֹשֶׁק, וּלְהָרִים קוֹל צְעָקָה לְמַעַן הָאֶבְיוֹנִים. תֵּן בִּי אֶת הַדַּעַת לִשְׁקֹד עַל מִלּוֹתַי בְּפֶלֶס הַהֲלָכָה, וּלְחַסֵּן אֶת אָזְנַי מִשְּׁמֹעַ דִּבְרֵי נְבָלָה, כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא אֶהְיֶה מַכְשִׁיל אֶת הָרַבִּים בִּקְרִיאַת דְּבָרִים אֲסוּרִים.
אִם יָקוּמוּ חֲכָמִים מִמֶּנִּי לְתַקֵּן אֶת אָרְחִי וּלְהַשְׂכִּילַנִי, תֵּן בִּי עֲנָוָה לִשְׁמֹעַ בְּקוֹלָם וּלְהוֹדוֹת עַל הָאֱמֶת. אַךְ אִם פוֹחֲזִים, חְנְפֵי הַמַּלְכוּת אוֹ בַּעֲלֵי אִינְטֶרֶס יְנַאֲצוּנִי אוֹ יְהַלְּכוּ עָלַי אֵימָה, נְטַע בִּי גְּבוּרָה וְקַשְׁיוּת עֹרֶף עַל מִשְׁמַר הַצֶּדֶק, מִבְּלִי לְהַבִּיט עַל מַעֲמָדָם, יִחוּסָם אוֹ כּוֹחָם שֶׁל הַמְּבַקְּרִים.
אַל תַּנִּיחַ לִי לִפֹּל בְּרֶשֶׁת הַמַּחְשָׁבָה כִּי כְּבָר הִשָּׂגְתִּי אֶת מְלֹא הַדַּעַת. תֵּן לִי אֶת הַזְּמַן, הַשְּׁקִידָה וְהַחֵשֶׁק לַחְקֹר עוֹד וְעוֹד, כִּי עֲמֻקָּה הִיא הָאֱמֶת וּמִדָּתָהּ אֲרֻכָּה מֵאֶרֶץ וּרְחָבָה מִנִּי יָם. עֲשֵׂנִי זָרִיז וּמָהִיר בְּתִקּוּן שְׁגִיּוֹתַי, וּבַל יְהֵא מָמוֹן אוֹ גַּאֲוָה לְעָצוֹר בַּעֲדִי מִלְּהוֹדוֹת בַּשֶּׁקֶר וּבַטָּעוּת.
אֵל רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן, קַבֵּל תְּפִלָּתִי בְּרָצוֹן. עֲשֵׂנִי כְּלִי לְחֶסֶד וְלֶאֱמֶת, כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיוּ מַעֲשֵׂי יָדַי וּמִלּוֹתַי מְקַדְּשִׁים שִׁמְךָ בָּעוֹלָם, וְלֹא יֵצֵא מִכְּתָבִי שׁוּם מִכְשׁוֹל וְשׁוּם קִלְקוּל. יִהְיוּ לְרָצוֹן אִמְרֵי פִי וְהֶגְיוֹן לִבִּי לְפָנֶיךָ, ה’ צוּרִי וְגוֹאֲלִי.
